What the Pentagram means:
Many people don't really know what the pentagram means. In general, they associate it with witchcraft and evilness, and it's complete nonsense. Yes...The pentagram has magickal qualities, but it is not evil, and it has a meaning. The lower four points are the elements, and the highest point is spirit. The circle around it means eternity. However, the pentagram is used for other things as well (although not used often anymore due to poor judgments), so the meanings don't stop there. But let's take a look, shall we?
The Pentagram is just a old as the bible, if not much older...
The recorded age as far as the pentagram goes is actually 3500 B.C...Well before Christ was even thought of. Perhaps due to its age, in my opinion, it's probably far older than that, as witchcraft has no known age because of how ancient it is.
The Medieval times: The rise of Christianity
First off as you should know, the pentagram was not considered an evil thing to people back in the middle ages. It was painted on knight's shields to show the five virtues, which are: piety, chivalry, chastity, courtesy, and generosity. In fact, due to people using this symbol back in the day, they would actually hang it from doors and windows to ward off demons and evildoing of any sort. It was also considered to be the symbol of truth. Ironic huh? Check this out:
A simple christian symbol
Yes folks, Catholics will NOT tell you this, but the pentagram was actually used as a christian symbol, far before the cross was recognized. It represents the five wounds that Jesus received.
The thought of the Pentagram as "Evil" is actually recent...
Lastly, the thought of the existence of the Pentagram being evil is actually recent. Before it was demonized, all these were known, or at least a great deal of these facts above. It's the thought of media being right and stereotypes taking hold of brilliant minds and closing them. Perhaps in some cases the upside down pentagram was mixed with with the upright one, and took it all as evil. The upside down was is actually thought to be man made, as Anton LaVey had created it when he created the church of Satan.
